Patients are asked to answer the question, ‘How likely is it that you would recommend our ward/department to friends or family if they needed similar care or treatment?’ There is a free text box for patients to explain why they gave the score they did and to add in any more detail they would like to.
To make sure this information is up-to-date, patients are asked to complete the short survey within 48 hours of discharge.
Most patients complete the survey before they leave the hospital and put it in one of the boxes that are on all the nurses’ stations and patient reception areas throughout the hospital.

We have changed the way we are report the results of the Friends and Family Test following new guidance published by NHS England.
We are now required to show:
The percentage score is calculated by dividing the number of people who are “likely or extremely likely” to recommend our services by the total number of responsesthen multiplied by 100 to get a percentage.
The same is done with the “unlikely and extremely unlikely” for the second percentage.
Feedback is also asked for on privacy and dignity, cleanliness, how you felt staff communicated with you and about the level of information you received.
This information and the comments you provide are fed back to all the services, as your opinions matter to us and we take them very seriously.
