In May 2017, we launched our biggest ever internal engagement event for staff and volunteers of the hospital, providing them with a platform for sharing ideas and building up relationships from across the Trust. In our outside marquee, we hosted sessions that were aiming to inspire, support and improve learning in our aim of becoming an outstanding organisation. Across the three days of the event, over 1,000 staff came through the doors to our marquee to get involved in workshops, presentations and even fitness classes!
The three days were themed around three topics; health and wellbeing, achieving excellence and improving staff and patient experience. Following feedback from the annual staff and patient surveys, as well as verbal feedback from staff, we formulated a programme that included all the topics that our staff wanted to talk about. Sessions ranged formal presentations from outside speakers to workshops where staff were able to discuss ideas to challenge our current ways of working.
Day 1 - Health and Wellbeing
The first day focused on improving the health and wellbeing of our staff and kicked off with an early morning yoga session. The highlight of the day was the health and wellbeing fair where both internal departments and outside organisations held stalls to promote healthy lifestyle choices and how their services could support that. We were lucky to have NHS England's Director of New Care Models Samantha Jones deliver a key-note presentation on how the vanguards are helping to improve wellbeing across the country.
Day 2 - Achieving Excellence
This built upon our news in November 2016 that we are now a 'Good' rated organisation by the CQC. The next step on our journey is 'Outstanding' so we held a number of workshops and presentations on what outstanding looks like and how we can achieve that as an organisation. Some really interesting topics were discussed and the day culminated in a key-note speech from Sir Anthony Seldon, Vice Chancellor of the University of Buckingham, who shared with our audience the importance of looking after yourselves as individuals if you want to succeed.
Day 3 - Improving Staff and Patient Experience
Finally we brought the attention on improving staff and patient experience, two key components of a successful NHS Trust. Following a morning focusing on technology, where we heard from Cerner's Medical Director Dr Giulio Bognolo, we finished on demonstrating the responsibility each and ever member of staff has on bringing about change. Powerful conversations around social movements identified small changes that can be made to improve the experience of all patients at the hospital.
Feedback on the event
The responses we received from staff have been overwhelmingly supportive of the event, with many being appreciative of just spending some time with other colleagues from across the hospital. Overall the event provided a brilliant learning opportunity for many members of staff as way as the chance to suggest some of their ideas to the most senior people in the organisation.
