The Trust will make every effort to co-operate with the media seeking an interview with either staff or patients. If you would like to arrange an interview or need further information on any news stories requiring an interview, please contact the Communications team on communications@mkuh.nhs.uk or 01908 996219.

All requests for interviewing/photographing patients must be made through the Communications team. Trust policy dictates that written permission must be obtained from a patient before photographs or filming is undertaken.

The Communications team will normally ensure this has been done and the patient is fully aware of the reasons for the request. Staff should also not be approached directly for comment or interview without prior permission from the Communications department.

Under no circumstances may interviews, filming or photography be carried out on or around the hospital site without the express permission of the Trust. Anyone found carrying out unauthorised filming; photography or interviews will be requested to leave the site immediately.

Condition checks

Condition checks

Requests for condition checks for individual patients will only be given out if you have the full name of the patient concerned, with the correct spelling.

Please do not contact the wards directly.

Unless you can satisfy the Communications team that your enquiry is a bona fide enquiry, no information will be given out. The Communications Manager will contact the appropriate Ward or Department, and establish the condition of the patient in question.

Only a brief indication of the progress of the patient will be given such as, the patient is ‘satisfactory’ or ‘stable’ or ‘critically ill’.

Please note - We place great emphasis on the need for the strictest confidentiality in respect of our patients.

We will not divulge any information about a patient or their medical condition unless we are given written permission from the individual or their next of kin.

Out of hours

Out of hours

If you do have an urgent enquiry out of normal hours, you should contact the hospital switchboard on +44(0)1908 660033 who will contact the duty press officer. The duty officer will return your call as soon as possible.

In the event of a declared major incident, out of hours media enquiries should NOT be made through the hospital main switchboard number, but directly to the Head of Communications on +44(0)1908 996217.

Major incidents

Major incidents

We recognise that the media has an important role to play in major incidents and arrangements for the dealing with media are an integral part of the hospital contingency plan for dealing with a major incident or event.

In the event of a declared major incident media enquiries should be made directly to the Trust Communications team on +44(0)1908 996217 and not through the main hospital switchboard. Depending on the nature of the incident it may not be possible to reply straight away, especially in the early stages, but all calls will be logged and returned as soon as possible.

We aim to be as co-operative as we can and the media will be given regular updates during an incident and, if and when appropriate, the opportunity for interviews.

Because the care and treatment of patients coming to us in the event of a major incident will be paramount, it may not be possible to meet requests to undertake interviews with specific members of staff involved in treating the wounded, i.e. clinicians, to fit in with media broadcast schedules.

Depending on the type of incident, the hospital will decide at the time on the best vantage point for reporters, photographers and cameramen. We are aware of the specific needs of the media in reporting such events and aim to be a co-operative as we can, but our decision on location will be final.

We also aim to provide adequate parking for satellite trucks and other media vehicles on the hospital site, but do reserve the right to move or relocate any vehicle we consider hampering the operation of the hospital.

We further reserve the right to remove from the site any member of the media we believe to be behaving inappropriately.
